Fly Fishing Overview
Spotted Bear Ranch is located deep in the woods of remote Northwest Montana, in between Glacier National Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Spotted Bear Ranch’s specialty is dry fly fishing for Montana’s native trout – the Westslope Cutthroat. These wild trout are plentiful, hungry and hard fighting. Other fish species native to this watershed includes the feisty, endangered Bull Trout (which commonly exceed 30 inches) and Mountain Whitefish. The season begins mid-June and continues through September. In addition to the South Fork, fish nearby tributaries, streams, creeks, and mountain lakes. The friendly and knowledgeable Spotted Bear Ranch guides are often complemented on their patience and teaching abilities.
Beyond its sensational fishing, Spotted Bear offers an unlimited world of outdoor adventure. Whatever your interests, the hosts will design a special experience that will leave lasting memories. Lodge guests enjoy the ranch’s historic lodge and rustic private cabins, remarkably comfortable beds, fresh cuisine and the friendly, engaging hospitality for which Montana is renowned. In addition to lodge fishing vacations, Spotted Bear Ranch offers unique horse pack and float trips into Montana’s largest wilderness area, the one million acre Bob Marshall. For the adventurous soul, these wilderness adventures are beyond compare. Spotted Bear Ranch was awarded the prestigious Orvis Expedition of the Year honor in both 2001 and 2004
Summer Information
Lodge Trips - are for guests preferring a private cabin and the modern amenities not typically found in the backcountry. Fishing options include float and wade fishing the South Fork in comfortable 14-foot inflatable rafts, hike and wade fishing the smaller waters, or float fishing the nearby high mountain lakes. Guests return to the comfort of their cabin each evening. Horseback riding on mountain trails is included. Hearty breakfast and spectacular dinners are served in the lodge dining room; lunches are typically streamside picnics.
Wilderness Pack and Float Trips - are for the adventurer looking for the ultimate fly fishing experience in the pure and unspoiled wilderness. The unique combination of horseback riding, camping, rafting, and float/wade fly fishing make this a trip to remember. Guests horseback ride into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, North America’s premier wilderness area, for the first two days. They arrive at the campsite in time for a few hours of fly fishing before and after dinner. The third day is a relaxing day when guests take advantage of the excellent hike/wade fishing near base camp and take time out to watch wildlife and take pictures. The last two days are spent floating and wade fishing the South Fork to the take out point. From the take out, guests walk or ride approximately 45 minutes to the trailhead where they are transported back to the lodge to clean up for dinner or head back to the Flathead Valley area. The uniqueness, exclusivity, and truly fantastic fly fishing easily make this Spotted Bear Ranch’s most popular trip.
The South Fork of the Flathead – Unique Among Montana’s Fly Fishing Rivers. The South Fork of the Flathead is considered Montana’s premier native trout fishery and is a favorite among the lucky few who have fished its unspoiled waters. Originating high in the Bob Marshall Wilderness at the confluence of Youngs and Danaher Creek, the South Fork flows freely for nearly seventy miles before emptying into the stunning Hungry Horse Reservoir. Hard to find and impossible to forget, the South Fork offers the experience of a lifetime to the angler. There’s no place on earth like it.
